Exercise Therapy
Using exercise and movement for treatment.
Exercise therapy is a program that is used by health care professionals, especially by physiotherapists to help their patients with their problem. With it, it is aimed to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability among individuals who suffer from pain and dysfunction. This includes where movement and function are compromised due to aging, injury, disease or environmental factors.
An assessment program is crucial to explore the history of the condition with a physical examination and a radiological investigation when necessary. Then, a tailored exercise therapy plan is designed that is sometimes accompanied by other physiotherapy interventions. There is a constant interaction between the physiotherapist and the patient throughout the treatment program.
At the end of the treatment, the patient continues to exercise at home. This provides the patients with an independency in the self-management of their problem, maintain and further enhance the recovery.
In studies, the effect of exercise therapy has been researched extensively and it is proven to be effective in restoration of normal musculoskeletal function and reducing pain that is caused by overuse injuries, trauma and other reasons. It also helps improve physical, psychological, emotional, and social well being.
